10 Signs Your Tarantula Is Going to Moult

Posted: June 1, 2025

Moulting is a natural but nerve-wracking part of every tarantula keeper’s journey. Being able to recognise the signs that a moult is coming can help you prepare—and may even save your spider’s life.

Here Are the 10 Signs to Watch For:

  1. Darker Abdomen: Often one of the first signs. The exoskeleton darkens as the new one forms beneath.
  2. Loss of Appetite: A tarantula that normally eats well but suddenly stops may be preparing to moult.
  3. Increased Hiding: Your spider may spend more time in its hide or retreat, seeking safety.
  4. Webbing Up: Expect to see more webbing around the hide, water dish, or the whole enclosure floor.
  5. Lethargy: Movement slows dramatically in the lead-up to a moult.
  6. Bald Spot Appears or Darkens: Especially common in New World species.
  7. Lying in a Strange Position: Tarantulas often lie on their backs just before moulting—it’s not dead!
  8. Restlessness Then Stillness: Some spiders pace or climb before going quiet.
  9. Shiny, Glossy Appearance: The new skin is forming under the surface and causes a glossy sheen.
  10. Refusal to Be Handled: A previously handleable tarantula may become defensive or unusually timid.

What Should You Do?

Leave them alone. Do not try to feed, handle, or move them unless absolutely necessary. Maintain clean water, ideal humidity, and peace.
