How to Tell If Your Tarantula Is About to Moult

Posted: May 26, 2025

One of the most fascinating — and nerve-wracking — parts of tarantula keeping is trying to figure out when a moult is coming. While every spider is different, there are some clear signs to watch for.

1. Dull or Darkened Colouration

Your tarantula may appear darker, shinier, or even patchy in colour. This is the old exoskeleton loosening as the new one forms underneath.

2. Refusal to Eat

Loss of appetite for days or weeks is a classic pre-moult sign. Don't panic — this fasting is normal and helps reduce internal pressure during the moult.

3. Reduced Movement

They may become lethargic or hide more than usual, conserving energy for the upcoming moult.

4. Lying on Their Back

This is the big one! Tarantulas flip onto their back to begin the moult. Don’t disturb them — it’s not a sign of death, it’s a natural and necessary position.

5. Webbing a Moult Mat

Some species create a soft mat of silk where they intend to moult. This helps with grip and protection during the process.

Support Them Through It

When you see these signs, stop feeding, reduce disturbances, and ensure water and humidity are ideal. And if you want to go the extra mile, pre-moult support like MoultMend can help prepare your spider internally, too.
